Kevin Todd’s Chroma256 International Colour Project explores relationships to colour involving design students from Australia, the USA, Germany, Ecuador, South Africa, Turkey, India and China, with exhibitions at University of Sunshine Coast, in Johannesburg and in Stuttgart throughout 2014. Chroma256B is a second colour project with partners in Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, India, Argentina and the USA that explores colours in a psychological context with similarities and difference apparent in each country. Exhibition begins September 21 – October 3, 2016

The work in this exhibition was produced from the responses by design student in six countries to a colour and text survey in relation to key words. Chroma 256 had both environmental and conceptual component and while there was a clear difference in the colours chosen from the environment, the colours chosen in relation to key words showed a marked similarity for each country. This similarity is further explored in Chroma 256b where students responded here. Although the colour palettes for each country are broadly similar there are differences and the relationships between text and image are also interesting. An understanding of relationships to colour can help artists and designers to better communicates cross culturally.
