Theme-based pictures

Lecture:
Today's class, Mr. Vinod started off with checking our e-portfolio updates and theme-based pictures. After receiving feedback, we continued our studio lighting exercise as there was no lecture. My coursemates were to model this week and we managed to do 2 shoots. Xin Qi and Kaymun were the models and the others were to set up the lighting, hair and operate the camera too.

Exercise instructions
Exercise Studio Lighting Exercise (not graded)

Period Portrait.

Identify a period picture within the years of 1940 to early 1960s. Choose a picture that you are able to reenact or recreate. Prepare and plan your outfit, make-up and hair for the shoot. Try to achieve the same or similar result as your reference. Edit your picture in photoshop and update the picture to your Facebook profile. Document the process in your reflection on your e-portfolio blog.

When you post the lighting exercise shot that you took of another person, along side the shot must be the example. You also have to post your picture which someone else took of you.

After that you are to include 5 shots that you attempted throughout the week for your theme based project. Not uploading 5 shots every week will result in minus marks for the ePortfolio, which is 20%.

You "have to" post your attempt of your series of 5 "every week"! from here on end.

Feedback:
Pursue both areas. There were some good shots in the old building facades. However, the f-stop needs to be higher f11/16, in order to capture the texture and tonality. The Isolationist images were not very good this time around, simply because they looked posed. You need to pay very good attention to the posture and movement if you pose them. Having said that, I think you need to spend a little more time stalking.

Reflection
Experience
For option 1 of the theme-based pictures, I tried to using friends as models in my picture and also tried to make them look as candid as possible. This week's series were taken at around 11am - 12 pm. For option 2 of the theme-based pictures, I focused more on lines and textures of facades. Most of my pictures for this option are composed in a way that only shows part of the whole image. For example, picture number 4, it only shows part of the stairs and not the whole stair.

Observation
For option 1, I observed that I should take from a further distance to increase the space of the background so that my subject matter would not look more like a full length portrait of somebody which is not appealing. For option 2, I realised that it doesn't capture much tonality in my pictures as I could be using the wrong camera settings.

Findings
For both of my options, I realised that option 2 is easier to shoot because my subject matter doesn't really require timing in capturing like option 1. Option 1 requires more effort and it is also time consuming. It is much easier to produce pictures for option 2 than option 1. I also realised that it is better not to ask friends to pose because no matter what, the outcome will not look candid.
