Assignment 2 (revised version)
Video Proposal
Instructions: Assignment 02 requires you to propose how you will be creating your video explaining about the contextual understanding which you have discovered in assignment 01 research.

Plot Synopsis (revised)
In the year of 2099, the world has revolutionized into the division of humans using colours, red, blue and yellow. Families are catagorized as either red, blue or yellow. People are allergic to the opposite colours of their own therefore they wear gloves to prevent skin contact with other families. A girl, from the blue family, who is very obedient because the children are raised in a very strict and squared society, they are required to have the same mindset and same behaviour. Every night, she always had nightmares and in the morning, she chants a code without knowing the reason why. One fine day, She received a parcel wrote - To: 3 RY. The moment she opened the parcel, she saw a time travelling machine where she was so curious about. Without thinking of the consequences, she pressed the button and travelled back in time to year 2026. She saw the exact same scene as she dreamed about every night and met 2 girls who experienced the same as her. The scene shows colours separating to red, blue and yellow. By instinct, they decided to paint it white. After painting, time is up and it's time for them to return to 2099. History was undo and the present and future changed. She removed her gloves, hoping nothing happens and nothing happened. It turns out that they are not allergic to each other, but they are being divided and catagorized as different individuals. Their rebellious behaviour changed the world and now people with different colours live together. While the 3 girls no longer belong to any colour, they are white which means they are all colours. The code was indicating that 3 girls and she was to find them, RY meant the other 2 girls were from red and yellow.

Exercise Studio Lighting & Theme-based Pictures

Lecture:
Today's class, Mr. Vinod started off checking our e-portfolio and giving us some feedback as usual. After checking, we were let out early.

Exercise instructions
Exercise Studio Lighting Exercise (not graded)

Period Portrait.

Identify a period picture within the years of 1940 to early 1960s. Choose a picture that you are able to reenact or recreate. Prepare and plan your outfit, make-up and hair for the shoot. Try to achieve the same or similar result as your reference. Edit your picture in photoshop and update the picture to your Facebook profile. Document the process in your reflection on your e-portfolio blog.

When you post the lighting exercise shot that you took of another person, along side the shot must be the example. You also have to post your picture which someone else took of you.

After that you are to include 5 shots that you attempted throughout the week for your theme based project. Not uploading 5 shots every week will result in minus marks for the ePortfolio, which is 20%.

You "have to" post your attempt of your series of 5 "every week"! from here on end.

Feedback:
No 3 is the best this week. However i think you need to vary your angles and the positioning of the person in the scene. The angles must be unique.

Reflection
Experience
For this week, I narrowed down my options to only one which is isolation. I shot all these pictures at a newly opened lrt station near my house because I thought it was a nice place to shoot at as it wasn't crowded. I chose to shoot at the lrt station is because I find the lines of bars, stairs, bridges and railing can add a little element to my pictures but also not too complicated.

Observation
I observed that I shoot most of these pictures from bottom to up means I stood on a lower ground shooting strangers at a more elevated ground than the ground I am standing on. This week I also tried not to shoot too near to my subject matter as I learned my lesson from last week's mistake.

Findings
I chose this option although I know that it is not easy at all and can be very time consuming because of the stalking and waiting for someone to appear in the frame. Despite that, I wanted to challenge myself more as I personally find if I choose option 2, it would not challenge my photography skills more than option 1. Option 2 was more of compositing the subject matter as it is already there for you to shoot whereas option 1 pushes me to be spontaneous and quick to shoot at any situation.

Assignment 2
Video Proposal
Instructions: Assignment 02 requires you to propose how you will be creating your video explaining about the contextual understanding which you have discovered in assignment 01 research.

Plot Synopsis
Every time Oliver pushes a red button on the one-minute time machine, he gets another try for what he did for the past minute. On a normal Sunday at the park, Oliver met this beautiful girl that he wanted to have a conversation with. He took his one-minute time machine with him and approached the girl. He sat down on the bench where the girl was sitting and put the one-minute time machine on his lap. Oliver started greeting this girl then the girl replied, 'Are you going to use your time machine on me?'. He thought it was a rough start so he wanted to try again but this time, hiding the time machine. So, he pressed the red button and time reversed. He greeted the girl, keeping the time machine behind his back. the girl greeted back. Oliver then introduced himself and asked the girl her name but the girl doesn't seem interested. Then, Oliver thought to himself that he needs to impress her so Oliver pressed the red button and reversed time. This time he asked if she wants to go for coffee then the girl seems interested. The girl said yes so then she stood up but then a book from her lap fell out. Oliver found a opportunity to impress her even more so he picked up the book and asked, ' So you like science?'. The girl then replied, ' Science? Science is for when I was in elementary. I am a doctorate in quantum theory.' Oliver then quickly realises that he made a wrong move, he pressed the red button. This time he asked, 'So you are into quantum theory and principles?' *reading the title of the book he memorised the minute before he pressed the one-minute time machine*. The girl was impressed thinking this guy has the same interest. She then asked, 'Which was your favourite chapter?'. He answered, 'Time travel!' and she replied 'Me too! It's amazing but its the scariest thing in the world.'. Oliver then said, 'Yeah! Wait what?!'. The girl said, 'Didn't you read the chapter 7 on time travelling application?'. Oliver said, 'Well actually I did not have time to read that, been busy practising actual time travel.'. The girl then was shocked and asked if he was practising it now. Oliver replied yes then the girl asked, 'For me? That's really touching because nobody has ever died for me.'. Oliver was confused so he quickly said, 'Well no, I'm still here physically.'. The girl then replied 'Not you exactly but you know, like you read it in the chapter that said time travel is impossible.'. Oliver kept denying and saying it's possible and that he had done it several times. The girl then said, 'No, every time you push the time machine button, you created a copy of yourself that exist a minute before you pressed the button in another world which means your original copy dies.'. Then the scene shows him dead in the previous scene after he pressed the time machine while the girl was asking for help and screaming. There are 3 scenes that shows Oliver on the floor dropped dead because he pressed the button 3 times so which means he died 3 times.

Theme-based pictures

Lecture:
Today's class, Mr. Vinod started off with checking our e-portfolio updates and theme-based pictures. After receiving feedback, we continued our studio lighting exercise as there was no lecture. My coursemates were to model this week and we managed to do 2 shoots. Xin Qi and Kaymun were the models and the others were to set up the lighting, hair and operate the camera too.

Feedback:
Pursue both areas. There were some good shots in the old building facades. However, the f-stop needs to be higher f11/16, in order to capture the texture and tonality. The Isolationist images were not very good this time around, simply because they looked posed. You need to pay very good attention to the posture and movement if you pose them. Having said that, I think you need to spend a little more time stalking.

Reflection
Experience
For option 1 of the theme-based pictures, I tried to using friends as models in my picture and also tried to make them look as candid as possible. This week's series were taken at around 11am - 12 pm. For option 2 of the theme-based pictures, I focused more on lines and textures of facades. Most of my pictures for this option are composed in a way that only shows part of the whole image. For example, picture number 4, it only shows part of the stairs and not the whole stair.

Observation
For option 1, I observed that I should take from a further distance to increase the space of the background so that my subject matter would not look more like a full length portrait of somebody which is not appealing. For option 2, I realised that it doesn't capture much tonality in my pictures as I could be using the wrong camera settings.

Findings
For both of my options, I realised that option 2 is easier to shoot because my subject matter doesn't really require timing in capturing like option 1. Option 1 requires more effort and it is also time consuming. It is much easier to produce pictures for option 2 than option 1. I also realised that it is better not to ask friends to pose because no matter what, the outcome will not look candid.

Kevin Todd, arriving from Australia (University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland)

Time: 11am-12pm - OPENING EVENT
Venue: CoDA Gallery, Taylor's University Lakeside campus
Date: September 21, 2016 (Wednesday)

AND
Time: 10am-12pm - Lecture and discussions with Kevin Todd
Venue: LT3
Date: September 22, 2016 (Thursday)

About the Artist. Kevin Todd has an extensive record of exhibitions and commissioned work in Australia and overseas and he has undertaken residencies in Australia, Malaysia, Turkey, India, Ireland and the United Kingdom. He is a regular visitor to Malaysia and is currently doing design work with his students for the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center in Sabah. Kevin is a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

Kevin Todd’s Chroma256 International Colour Project explores relationships to colour involving design students from Australia, the USA, Germany, Ecuador, South Africa, Turkey, India and China, with exhibitions at University of Sunshine Coast, in Johannesburg and in Stuttgart throughout 2014. Chroma256B is a second colour project with partners in Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, India, Argentina and the USA that explores colours in a psychological context with similarities and difference apparent in each country. Exhibition begins September 21 – October 3, 2016

The work in this exhibition was produced from the responses by design student in six countries to a colour and text survey in relation to key words. Chroma 256 had both environmental and conceptual component and while there was a clear difference in the colours chosen from the environment, the colours chosen in relation to key words showed a marked similarity for each country. This similarity is further explored in Chroma 256b where students responded here. Although the colour palettes for each country are broadly similar there are differences and the relationships between text and image are also interesting. An understanding of relationships to colour can help artists and designers to better communicates cross culturally.

Theme-based pictures

Lecture:
There wasn't any lecture but Mr. Vinod did check our e-portolios. After checking, we went ahead to do our studio lighting exercise (ungraded). This time it was Chia Ying's turn to pose while we set the lightings, position and her hair. We managed to do it by ourselves. After we were done, we were allowed to leave.

Exercise instructions
Series of 5
What makes a good/average/poor series with regard to consistency
1. Good consistency: variation within the theme / eclectic mix with a good range but bound strong unmistakable mood and style.
2. Average Consistency: some variation within the theme / an acceptable mix with a range loosely bound around a mood and style.
3. Poor Consistency: not much variation within the theme / monotonous mix with a poor range bound poorly with weak mood and style.

All 5 images must maintain an identity by way of mood and style. Consistency while
required must not be predictable, suitable variations within the theme needs to be present in the series.

Feedback:
Please write the details of the exposure. Also, the second option looks better at the moment. Look for the scenes first, and then wait for the people to show up. Get your exposure settings done while you wait. The first option looks more dramatic than the second option when considering the work of the previous week.

Reflection
Experience
For the studio lighting exercise, I really enjoyed the entire process, from lighting to prepping the model. We met some difficulties with trying to achieve the lighting as near as possible to the picture but then we overcome it as a team. For option 1 of the theme-based pictures, I produced a series that is slightly different from last week's. This week I try to take at places with more greens and nature while last week's one was more minimal and less ornaments in the background. For option 2, I took the similar type of corners of old buildings.

Observation
For option 1 of theme-based pictures, I observed that to shoot a minimal isolation picture, I need to look for a large space with not many distracting ornaments. I realised that the place I am shooting at must not be crowded because then I won't be able to shoot single person. For option 2 of the theme-based pictures, the places I shoot is sometimes unexpected, like backstreets or rundown shops. Therefore, I carry my camera everywhere I go just in case I come across a nice old building.

Findings
From option 1 theme-based pictures, I learned that it is really difficult to get single person shoot in a crowded place so my choice of venue must not be crowded and has a large space. I also learned to avoid people noticing that I am taking a picture of them by quickly moving my camera direction to somewhere else as if I am taking something else. This helps the picture to look candid. For option 2, it is easier to shoot because these corners of old buildings can be easily found and it doesn't need to be taken fast and immediately unlike option 1.
