About The Photographs
“ISOLATION”.
Alone and set apart from the background.
I always have a strong desire and need to work alone. This has led my subject
matter of my series work to migrate towards individual souls shot against
minimal background, finding solace from isolated strangers. My aim for this
series work was to shoot strangers candid and without me (photographer) being
seen so that the nature of the scene remains unaffected. The process of
developing these pictures was basically setting up my camera at a chosen place
and stalk until a subject matter appears in the frame. What I do find
interesting from this social observation point of view is that it has
fundamentally changed the behavior of the individual, to well, make them seem
more individual. It makes me ponder on how every individual has a story to
tell. And as my own fate and destiny would have it, isolation has ironically
turned out to be the key to my own personal happiness, strength and creativity.
This body of my work directly mirrors my own personality. Miraculously, the end
result has become the sharing and expressing of my own self to the world through
my solitude, simplicity and joy.
As for the
technicalities, all the photographs were taken in between morning and the
afternoon. When harsh shadows is intended, I shoot more towards the afternoon
but when I want to achieve a subtle picture, I shoot earlier in the morning
where the sun is not so glaring yet. The venues I shoot at are usually very
minimal as I did not want excessive ornaments in the picture so that it does
not divert the viewer’s attention. My series includes individuals in different
motions, like walking, running and sitting. The range of aperture I shoot in
was between F11 to F13 because I wanted a wider depth of field. As for the ISO,
it ranges from 400 to 5000 which gives an abundance of light which I can easily
underexpose it. Which bring me to the shutter speed, varies from 1/160 to
1/1000. In conclusion, this series has not only taught me useful skills of a
photographer but also helped me see a different perspective of the world and
helped me learn the impact a camera can convey.
